ABOUT Sandra Velasquez

Sandra Lilia Velasquez is the CEO and Founder of Nopalera, a culture-forward modern Mexican luxury beauty brand she launched in November 2020 from her Brooklyn apartment with no outside funding. Born and raised in San Diego to Mexican parents, she grew up bilingual and bicultural and identifies as Chicana — an identity that anchors her work today. Before turning to beauty, she spent 14+ years as the lead singer of the Latin alternative band Pistolera, which toured internationally, released multiple studio albums, and had its music featured on shows like Breaking Bad and on NPR's Tiny Desk, while also working in CPG sales at brands including HiBar, Van Leeuwen, and Mast Brothers Chocolate. Drawing on that blend of storytelling and business experience, she founded Nopalera to elevate and celebrate Latin culture through premium body-care products rooted in the iconic nopal cactus. A recipient of the Latino Startup of the Year award at the L'Attitude Match-Up Conference, the Valde Latinx Entrepreneur Grant, and the Clean Beauty Summer School Pitch Grant, she also hosts The Nopalera Podcast and mentors emerging Latina founders.
